I can tell you I was a very proud member and contributor of the Kunena team and project and am writing this article hoping it can help you with some of the possible problems occuring after your upgrade from Kunena 1.5 to 1.6.
One of the things that can happen to you and many others is that the BBcode editor-bar is disappeared and that the emoticons are there, but not working anymore. This also happened to me and the first thing I was thinking, OMG this is a bug in Kunena and I need to report this asap!
I can tell you, you are wrong about this! From Joomla 1.5.19 and higher Joomla incorporated a new version of MooTools (1.2.4) that is going to be the standard in Joomla 1.6. Joomla warned all the developers about 6 months ago about this so they can use this knowledge and prepare themselves. The Kunena developers did and used this in Kunena 1.6. Maybe use is not the right word, it is required for Kunena 1.6 to work properly.
The only problem is that there are a lot of templates, components, plugins or whatever using an old version of Mootools or cause conflicts that disable the new MooTools. This does NOT mean Kunena is not working, but this means you need to find out what is causing the conflicht, and even better, solve it.
First of all. Make sure you run all the latest version of all your components and plugins.
The second one is something wrote by Kunena developer fxtein:
To diagnose any java script problems I highly recommend you use Firefox and install the Firebug plugin. Then look at the java scripts that are being loaded for your site.
If you have an error like "Browser no defined" in slimbox-min.js or slimbox.js it is a clear indication that mootools 1.2.x is not being loaded.
You can also look down the list of java scripts loaded. Go to Script and click on the drop down that lists the currently shown script file - you should see the list of all that are being loaded.
There are two possible version that get loaded:
/media/system/js/mootools.js WRONG - OLD OUTDATED 1.1 VERSION
/plugins/system/mtupgrade/mootools.js - CORRECT - 1.2.x
If in question compare the list of java scripts on your site, with the ones at kunena.com

If you still encounter problems there is always a third option. Go to Kunena.com and join the forum. Find an existing thread that you can join or start your own. Give the developers your URL where the problem exists and maybe even a login to the backend. They are more than willing to help you solve the problem and get the best experience out of the best forumcomponent available for Joomla.
Want to be really generous to the Kunena Team? Use the "Thank you" buttons in the supportforum or if you are supergenerous that day, give them lots of stars on the Joomla! Extensions Directory. They can live for weeks on five stars!
